National Hispanic Landscape Alliance (NHLA) members RulyScapes, Denison Landscaping, and John Deere Landscapes, and others, contributed more than $8,000.00 in labor and materials to build a new playground for the Southwestern Youth Association (SYA) and improve the seven acres of playing fields at the non-profit community sports park in Centreville, Virginia. The SYA Sports Park provides a rare opportunity for children to play organized sports on natural grass fields in a part of the country where state-owned and municipal fields have largely been converted to artificial turf. The finished playground includes a play unit with swings and slides, as well as a series of low ground level activities, making the space attractive to different age groups. “As the grateful recipients of this service project, we have not only realized important site improvements, we have also become more aware of the significant environmental and human health benefits of our natural grass playing fields,” said SYA President, Gary Flather, to NHLA members who participated in the National Day of Service.
